Trail Ecology Survey Workshop Part 2: Survey Procedures and Reporting

Event Date: Wednesday, May 21, 2025
Event Time: 7:00 pm - 8:15 pm
New York- New Jersey Trail Conference Headquarters- Remote Option on Zoom also possible
600 Ramapo Valley Road, Mahwah, NJ

Would you like to help protect our environment while you hike? Have you already taken Part 1 of our Trail Ecology Survey workshop series? Then you are ready to take this required workshop to learn about the field survey protocols and data reporting associated with the survey program. Once completed with this part of your training, you will officially be ready to take on an assignment and become an official Surveyor!

In this workshop (which is Part 2 of our Trail Ecology Survey workshop series), you will learn about the data recording and reporting procedures required for the survey program. You will also be introduced to some very useful nature apps to help with the identification and reporting of the invasive species and pest and pathogen-resistant native species you are trying to find along your assigned trail section. This workshop will be a combination of a live Powerpoint presentation and taped video demonstrations of the field survey and data recording and reporting process.

This workshop will provide you with the tools and confidence to search for and report the invasive and native species found on this year's survey list. Data that each surveyor submits is reviewed by Trail Conference and state agency staff in the winter and used to establish management priorities and allocation of resources for restoration work in the following years. This link between volunteer reporting and land management action is so critical to protecting our region's natural areas and the wildlife it supports. We will also be offering optional guided nature walks throughout the summer to build confidence and learn together (eep checking the Trail Conference's events calendars for those dates)!

  • Format: In person training with Hybrid Zoom option (link will come in confirmation email). In person training is highly recommended, if possible, to build a more community feel to the workshop.
  • Who Should Attend: Curious nature lovers and hikers that want to learn about the diversity of life on the natural areas surrounding trails and how to protect those areas.
  • Where to meet: New York-New Jersey Trail Conference Headquarters, 600 Ramapo Valley Road, Mahwah, NJ  07430
  • Contact: Brent Boscarino, [email protected]

This Workshop is hosted as part of Trail U.
