Come join the Catskills Lean-To Crew on improving the Long Pond Mountain Shelter.
The Scope of the Work:
- Remove accumulated dirt and leaf debris from the base of the shelter.
- Stain the exterior of the shelter. Sand and clean logs to remove any dirt and growth first.
- Stain the floor. Try to deter porcupine gnawing, using cayenne pepper.
- Replace the existing wood shingle roof with a new cedar shingle roof.
- Replace the existing privy with a newly pre-fabricated privy, in a new location.
- General site maintenance.
- Parking: We will park and bring in supplies from the DEC Long Pond Trailhead Parking Area. It is the first one, on the right. The address is 112 Flugertown Rd. Livingston Manor, NY. Google Maps Link
- Hike In: It is a 2.1 mile hike to the leanto over a snowmobile trail. It is a moderate uphill on a wide trail.
- What to bring: Water, lunch and snacks, sturdy shoes, water, safety goggles, gloves, bug spray, and a headlight. If you'll be spending the night, bring your overnight gear and food.
- Where to meet: We will meet at 9am on Thursday and Friday so we can coordinate carrying in needed supplies. Volunteers, if coming later in the day or arriving on Saturday or Sunday will hike on their own. Additional details will be communicated with those volunteers attending.
- Water: is available from Long Pond directly or from the pond outlet. A filter is advisable.
- The Shelter should be available for sleeping in during the trip
- Camping: You can either come for the day or stay at the shelter to make a fun volunteer trip out of the experience! Eric will spend Friday and Saturday night. For those staying over we do a combination of shared and individual food.
- Carpooling is encouraged! Eric will facilitate. Driving time from Midtown NYC is 2.5 hours.
- Tools: will be provided.
- Minors under 18: Must fill out a Guardian Consent Form and attend with a parent or guardian.
