Catskills Trail Crew Workday
Saturday, May 16, 2026
9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Balsam Lake Mountain Wild Forest
Livingston Manor, NY
Join the Catskills Trail Crew as we work to clear the overgrown Mill Brook Ridge Trail connecting Alder Lake to the Balsam Lake Mountain fire tower.
We will be using loppers and handsaws to clear encroaching brush and minor blowdowns to restore the trail to a much better condition.
- What to Expect: A challenging yet rewarding day of clearing out a trail in the heart of the Western Catskills. Plus, we have the option of going up the Balsam Lake Mountain Fire Tower, making this a great work trip for those participating in the Catskills Fire Tower Challenge or knocking out their 3500 Club list.
- Distance/elevation: Starting from Alder Lake, the trail gradually ascends to the Beaver Meadow Shelter, and then ascends more steeply to the ridge. Total elevation gain is ~1000ft over 3 miles if we make it all the way up to the ridge. Anticipate hiking between 5 and 7 miles depending on how much progress we are able to make.
- What to bring: Good footwear, snacks, lunch, water, bug spray and/or head net, and a good attitude!. Also, bring gloves, safety glasses, and any hand tools that may be useful. PPE and tools will be provided if you don't have them.
- Where to meet: The main parking lot at Alder Lake. As is the case for much of the Catskills, cell service is limited or nonexistent in the area so please plan ahead to be on time. - Google Maps Link
